Horse Painting Portraits – Ebony in Oils on Canvas
Nicholas uses a soft, natural color palette in his horse oil paintings, carefully matching the tone, light, and time of year from your reference photos. In the painting of Ebony, you’ll see how he kept the background fresh and gentle to complement her dark coat – capturing both her likeness and the feel of the day perfectly. About the Commission of Ebony
In 2011, Samantha Campbell from the UK contacted us about a memorial portrait of her beloved horse Ebony. Sadly, Ebony had recently passed away due to colic at the grand age of 29. She was still being ridden and in great form, which made her loss all the more unexpected. We were honored to create a lasting tribute in oils for Sam and her family.
The reference photo Sam sent was wonderfully clear, which gave Nicholas everything he needed to bring Ebony to life on canvas. He retained her tack in the portrait just as shown in the photo and softened the background to remove visual distractions like buildings, letting Ebony remain the focus.
