Horse Oil Portrait – Tequilla (Donny) on Canvas
Side-on profile portraits work beautifully at larger sizes. Tequilla’s portrait was painted on a square 20 x 20 canvas – giving it a modern feel while allowing Nicholas to capture a stunning level of detail. About the Commission of Tequilla (Donny)
Jaime Todd, from Ireland, commissioned this oil portrait of her beloved horse Tequilla (also known as Donny) in 2014. Sadly, Donny had passed away, and this portrait was to be a lasting memory for the family.
Jaime sent us a range of reference photos — one was selected for Donny’s pose and another to guide the colouring. She also requested a gentle outdoor field-like background to give the feel of nature without drawing focus away from Donny himself.
Nicholas painted the portrait on a 20 x 20 inch square linen canvas to suit a specific wall space in Jaime’s home. The result was a clean, modern composition filled with warmth and sentiment.

Client Feedback from Jaime
“It’s just perfect in every possible way and I’m so grateful to both of you. The richness, the character, the expression… it’s the next best thing to having her back – it leaves the best of our photographs way behind. We will treasure it both as a fantastic work of art and as a memory we can keep alive.”
“Everyone that has seen it so far is just speechless. We’ve shed some more tears and are so delighted. It commands attention the moment you open the door, which is exactly what we hoped for.”
