Traditional Hand Painted Pet Portraits by Pet Portrait Artist Melanie Phillips

Pet Portraits Work In Progress Page 2

This is my second page for my pet portrait work in progress section of the website. I'm normally working on a few portraits at one time, I like to stagger them at different stages so that I can give each one a good amount of drying at various stages. So if you see your portrait here and it stops for a few days or a week it means that its simply too wet to continue working with. Dark coloured dogs are the most difficult in that the pigment is notorious for its lengthy drying time.

To be able to work on a few portraits at a time enables me to have a fresh working week. Many people ask me do i get bored just painting dogs all day every day - the answer simply is no. Every single dog is different, each one has its own personality and character to capture, different colours, head studies, full bodies, backgrounds and so on. No two portraits are every the same. So no two days are ever the same in the studio!

Pet Portraits work in progress for Victor Burles UK 'Lucka' 16 x 12 Oil On canvas

This is a portrait for a returning client, I drew his boxer a couple of years ago (in the breed section of my site) and now Andrew has returned to commission a portrait of Jack for a gift for a member of his family. It will be drawn in graphite pencil on white hot pressed Italian paper.

This is the detail of the portrait and the final scan. Once each piece is complete the final scan is placed in my showcase blog and the photographs I have taken during the process are placed on my work in progress blog, so they are always available for everyone to view.
