Pet Portrait Photography- Action Shots

Action Shots

If you want to capturing your pet moving, playing, jumping etc as in the photo on the right of Emma, who has been playing in the pond, you will need to make sure you have a lot of light coming into the lens for it to capture the movement. You need good daylight, if its a dull day and you are within range use a flash and auto focus so that the camera focuses very quickly on your subject.

Burst Capture

Burst capture is a great way of capturing your pet running or playing. If your camera has the facility it will take a number of consecutive photos per second, capturing the movement of your pet just like the four shots below. There were many more shots in this sequence - about 15 in total but this small burst of pictures gives you an idea of what burst capture is capable of capturing. Please bear in mind that on most digital cameras the focus that is set within the initial frame is used throughout the burst capture. Meaning that if your dog is running towards you, your final shots may be blurred as the camera doesn’t reassess focus thought the shots. Actions shots aren’t usually suitable for a main portrait but could be useful for the extra sketches when commissioning a montage sketch.
