Pet Portrait Photography - Correct Camera Angles
The most important aspect of taking a photo of a pet is to use the correct camera angles. The following will give you a few tips on dog photography. Use the navigation above to move between the photography sections.
Looking down on your pet - Many people tend to look down on their pet when they are taking photos - this is natural as humans are taller than dogs and we look down on them and they look up at us! So the obvious angle to take a photo is to look down on the animal. However, this not only distorts the animal’s head but also give a wrong impression as to what the animal ‘really ‘ looks like. The best way is to get down on the animals level so that you can take photos of the dog from its eye level. To the right are a couple of examples of this

Taking a photo looking down on your pet gives a distorted look of the dogs face and is not suitable for a pet portrait painting. |

This photo of a Beagle has been taken on the dogs level and is the perfect angle, it shows the full face of the dog and its both clear and in focus. |
Your Pet Looking up at you!
Sometimes our pets look up too much! In this case we can see Jake was looking up at his owner who was standing behind the photographer. Although its excellent to have two people while taking photos sometimes this can be a hindrance when the dog keeps looking up at them! Try to get the dog to look at the camera, or get the helper to crouch to one side behind the photographer to get the perfect angle. |
