Archived Coloured Pencil Pet Portraits Gallery 4
Welcome to my coloured pencil archived Gallery. All of my pet portraits start off in the Work in Progress section of the website. Once complete they are exhibited in the main galleries. I like to keep the main oil gallery to only 4 or 5 pages, as this is easier for me to maintain.
I paint about 40 to 50 portraits per year so obviously I couldnt have them all on there! So to make room for the new pieces, and to give everyone a chance to see their portrait on my website, I have created an archived gallery for my older artwork. You will find examples from the last few years and if you would like to see larger examples of any of these portraits please don't hesitate to email me at any time.
This particular archived gallery is dedicated to coloured pencil portraits. I rarely create a coloured pencil portrait these days, i much prefer working with oils which are more in demand. |

Coloured Pencil portraits are a delightfully versatile and vibrant medium. They are particularly suited to my style of working, as they enable me to give precise and accurate definition allowing me to create much detail within each drawing. My Coloured Pencil portraits are drawn on heavy white Italian Fabriano Paper. This type of portrait needs to be framed under glass. |

Colored pencils are an excellent way to portray any animal. The medium allows me to create a very detailed portrait of a pet and the outcome is very delicate. They are a step above pencil drawings in that the addition of color enables you to represent a pet with even more accuracy. Colored pencil portraits take roughly twice as long to complete than a black and white graphite pencil drawing. This is due to the addition of color and the added complexity this brings. As I am sure you are aware a brown dog isn't simply brown, the coat of a brown dog may be made up of 10 different hues. When you add sunlight to the equation, these hues are multiplied. When drawing with colored pencils I may, at any one time, be using 15 to 20 pencils of various colors. I achieve the subtle graduations and texture qualities of the individual pet by the use of many layers of fined tuned colours. |

Dark coloured or black dogs can be a difficulty for any artist in any medium. A pencil drawing or an oil painting is probably the best choice for a black or dark coloured pet. If you have a dark coloured dog and you would like advice, please email me with your photo and I will give you my professional opinion and which medium I feel would produce the best portrait for you. |

I use Prismacolor colored pencils and derwent coloursoft, which are made from the purest pigments and finest raw materials. These are not to be confused with watercolour pencils, I prefer these as they allow me to create sharp detail where needed and soft detail in all other areas, the watercolour pencils can leave a soft waxy effect without achieving any sharpness. You can see by the detail above the complexity involved in one of my coloured pencil portraits, I almost create every single fine piece of fur. |
