Pet Portraits Tour - Choosing a Medium

If you are interested in commissioning a pet portrait, for yourself or friends and family, and would like to find out how, then this is a great place to start. These few pages will lead you through the general process giving you a quick run down of the things you need to know. The first step is to think about which medium you would like. Once you have an idea of which medium you would like - or understand how each medium looks, you can move on to the next stage of the Pet Portrait Tour all about sizes.
Oil Paintings

My oil portraits take many hours to complete, I spend a lot of time layering colours and allowing the oil to dry in between stages. This is my most popular medium and the most stunning. Oil paintings are great for head studies, full bodies and full backgrounds. They are painted on professionally stretched canvas in a wide range of standard sizes.
Pastel Drawings

Pastels are a wonderful and soft medium to work with. These portraits are drawn on specialist velour paper which provides a beautiful soft effect. Pastels closely resemble oil paintings but don't require any drying time. They are suitable for head, full body and full backgrounds and you can have as many pets in the portrait as will fit. Pastels must be framed under glass.
Graphite Pencil Drawings

Graphite Pencil is the fastest medium to work with and each portrait is drawn by hand on Italian Fabriano paper. This medium is best suited for head studies and full bodies and can have a background if suitable. They are drawn on an off white heavy paper and must be framed under glass.

"Wow! It's beautiful! It's amazing to watch the process involved. Bravo, Melanie...that's all I can think to say! I'm very excited to have this in our home! If you were here I'd give you a big hug, and I know my wife would, too! " Steve Brown
