Here you will find a larger image of  'Barney' a flat coated retriever. This was quite an unusual commission in that the client wanted two large portraits of his dog together in one portrait. I was aware, of course, that it could look like the portrait was of two separate dogs. I created Stuart Rivett a number of mockups to show him how his portrait could look and he finally settled on this design to the size of 20x30. He wanted the portrait to be life size – and because I wasn’t totally sure of the size of his dog I suggested that he could measure Barney to make sure I could get the portrait the correct size. This was his reply

Hi Melanie, You would have killed yourself laughing watching me measure Barneys head tonight...... He kept grabbing the tape measure and running off round the kitchen with it but I finally managed to measure him as follows: 7 inches from ear to ear, 5 inches from underneath his mouth to the top of the head, 11 inches from nose to the back of his head, (all measurements are approx!).......

I could just imagine this scenario and had a good giggle when this email came in! So I continued on with this layout as I knew that Barney would be just right. As the portrait progressed Stuart and his children were able to see it progress in the work in progress pages – this is what he emailed during the progress.
