We have just stayed at Rhiwson Uchaf (Feb 2010) in the heart of the rural welsh countryside for a short break to recharge our batteries. We like to do this every once in a while, we work from home so we are 'always' at work. Cottages are great for us, the more remote the better, especially those that don't have phone or internet.
We a big fans of Under the Thatch cottages, we have stayed in one previously, they are very eco friendly, dog friendly and most importantly they are all old cottages full of history - perfect for us as an interest of ours is old houses. We live in an old Welsh cottage ourselves and love playing detective, delving into its history. |
Rhiwson Uchaf was a very comfortable, very warm and happy place to stay, it is a Welsh Long House, built on a slope with the living quarters at the top end and the cow house (byre) at the lower so that the effluent from the animals wouldn't flow into the house. The thatch is still intact under the tin roof.
The house is grade II* listed so a lot of the features have been maintained or restored which is wonderful. The old dairy can be seen in the photos along with a picture from before it was renovated. The original slate slabs are present and originally they would have been used to separate cream from the milk in order to churn butter. The milk would fill the sinks and after a period of time they would drain the milk through the center holes leaving the cream clinging to the slate sinks for collection. Fascinating! Hope you enjoy the photos. |
