Melanie and Nicks Pet Portraits Studio

Welcome to our studio. If you are a client or an artist and would like to come and visit us, our door is always open. If you drop us a line or give us a ring we will put the kettle on ready. If you are visiting from abroad and want to try some typically British food we will try to get some fancy cakes in ready!

Below are some photos of our studio. An efficient and comfortable workspace is an important aspect of our work. If you aren't comfortable and happy in your working environment it can be reflected in your work. Having purchased our cottage in August 07 we had the chance to convert a room into a studio and design it from scratch to exactly how we wanted it.

I had some priorities - i needed a stationary area, a packing area and a large enough space for my computer, dual monitor set up with scanner and A3 printer, my easel and painting table. Nick also had to have a space large enough for a dual monitor setup, easel and painting table. We also needed ample room to store art materials away and have the ones we use frequently within easy reach.

The idea of having a room large enough to accommodate all this was quite daunting, but we managed it. The finished results are below and if you would like to see the construction from start to finish of the studio visit the 'making of the studio' section!

This is me at my computer, working on my website, having a quick coffee break! I am often interrupted by Amram our studio cat who likes to get himself comfortable on my lap while working, or stopping me form working. Amrams favourite trick when he wants attention is to stand in front of my monitor so i cant see! He does have his own chair too....
This is the view of my workstation and as you can see I have everything within easy reach. I sit next to my computer while painting as i find it a lot easier. I run a forum and so need to be on hand at all times during the day, i check emails throughought the day so i can reply with ease and i also use it as my multimedia entertainment system while i work.

This is a view of my easel and you can see nicks easel in the background. We have small painting tables that are easy to move with our pallets on so they can be put out of the way if needed. We have natural light coming form the velux window but also have an easel lamp which isn't visible in the photo, it shines down onto the canvas with a daylight tube bulb so we can paint in the evenings if its dark. This is Nicks area, he is pretty well set up with his computer which he also uses as his multimedia entertainment system while working. He has access to the internet and has natural light from a velux window above as well as daylight bulbs from spot lights in the ceiling and an easel lamp. He also has the materials we need to hand, on the other side of his easel.

This is my stationary area where i keep all bills, receipts, letters, photos form clients, and my most important piece of working equipment - my whiteboard with our list of clients on. This is also where i do the yearly accounts. Its pretty organized with box files and magazine files so i don't loose anything important....well try not to! This is the packing and preparation area. I purchase Fabriano and velour paper in large sheets and so need cut each piece to size. This area is perfect so that the paper doesn't get creased. Its also a great space for packing as there is plenty of room and i can keep my large rolls of bubble wrap underneath the table. The table is movable so i can pull it out if needed.
