Melanie and Nick's Pet Portraits Studio
Welcome to our page of photos of our art studio. Both Nick and myself work in our little cottage studio in the heart of rural wales painting our portraits on a daily basis. If we are not walking our rescue dog Tom, sitting by our cosy wood burner or out in the garden in the summer months, you will invariably find us in our studio working away painting, drawing, tutoring our distance learning courses or developing our website. We like our studio to be cosy and comfortable so we have recently decorated (October 2010) took away the carpet that was here when we moved in to expose the old wooden floorboards and sanded, stained and satin varnished the floors. We wanted to do this when we moved in a few years ago but we knew it would be a huge job. We have been working a lot on our cottage to bring it back to its former glory. Sanding the floors throughout the upstairs has been well worth the effort and we are so pleased with the results. The studio is now a great working environment and I hope that you enjoy the photos below. |

This is Nicks working area and depending who has the largest commission at the time we share the large studio easel. In the main Nick does the majority of the portraits so its at his work station most of the time. Working in one room for a minimum of 9 hours per day, you need an organised, clean working environment. Tom does his best to untidy things, but in the main it works well. |
This is my work area. I have the velux window above me for natural light for painting and drawing, I have the scanner and printer connected to my computer as I deal with the business side, I correspond with clients, maintain and update the websites, organize the commissions, photograph the portraits at all stages including the framed paintings, pack the portraits, and do the accounts etc. |

We used to have this as our packing area but we deiced we needed a dedicated area to entertain clients. We chose a meadow green colour sofa to go with the wood floor and it works well. The day the sofa arrived, we had clients to the studio, as you can see in the photo below. Nicks the guitarist by the way, this is his pride and joy, his Gibson Les Paul and he has just got his ultimate guitar, an Ernie Ball Musicman axsis supersport, which didn't make the studio photos but it's in the corner by his desk! |

We have cleverly designed a packing area whereby we have a bench running across the main mart of the room and just below this a large table pulls out and pushes back in when not in use. This enables us to be flexible with the space for different activities in the studio, packing, cutting paper, sorting commissions, printing etc. |
Last but not least, I couldn't take photos of the studio without a dedicated one of Tom. He seems to have got in all of the photos while I was taking them, so here he is in his bed looking quite cute and cosy! Toms not allowed on any of our furniture, we have trained him well, so we know he wont go on the sofa, he's a very good boy! |
