the making of....

Welcome to the making of the pet portrait studio.

The photos below were taken at various stages of the studios conversion. The room was used as a bedroom in the cottage, and was perfect to convert into a studio.

It has a velux window in the roof and a smaller cottage window the other side for light both sides of the room. This was one of the main things that swayed us to purchase the cottage, the wonderful light it had upstairs. As soon as you walk up the staircase the sun streams in from above and continues to do so in the other rooms including the studio. Light is so important for an artist.

As you can see from the pictures, we removed cupboards, laid new carpet, painted and decorated and built new desks suitable for our needs. I tried to look for pre made desks but there just wasn't anything available on the market that was big enough, and who would deliver to rural wales! It has been a blessing in disguise in a way as we have the perfect set up for each area of the studio.

The room has a cupboard to the left of the photo which was used as a walk in wardrobe. I converted this to a storage space with shelving.
The room had a built in pine wardrobe which we decided to dismantle as we needed floor and wall space, more than storage space.
As you can see at this point the walls definitely needed painting! This is Nick removing the last of the wardrobe.

Before we decorate the walls were painted a peach colour, but we decided to lighten it up a bit with a lighter ivory cream. The corner of the room needed quite a few coats and at this point you could still see the green underneath. We decided to purchase a hard wearing carpet in a sensible colour for the studio. We had a cream colour carpet in our last studio to keep things light, however it was so difficult to keep clean with paints and pastels around i wanted to go for something more practical. We chose an earthy colour to match the feel of the cottage. We wanted to make some really sturdy large desks for the back wall and couldn't find anything suitable on the market. The large home made wardrobe had wonderful solid pine doors and so this became the top of my desks.

We used baton on the wall and adjustable legs from Ikea to create the desks and they are perfect. If you move slightly to the right from the last picture this is nicks area just under the Velux window. We have the hot water tank in here with storage above and inside which is handy. This is the other side of the room, which is the packing area. As you can see the wooden beams are present throughout the room and the cottage.
