Lake District Holiday - June 2010
We have recently been on a very relaxing and invigorating holiday in the Lake District with friends and I thought I would add a selection of photos as the views are spectacular. I thought my clients and website visitors who have never visited the UK might be interested in seeing the beautiful and historic countryside we have. The whole area is a conservation area and is the largest National Park in the UK so it is very protected. Thousands of walkers visit each year to climb the fells and we certainly did our share of walking while we were there.
We stayed in a cottage overlooking lake Windermere and our first walk was around Grassmere and Rydal Waters stopping off at the pub along the way. We must have walked most of the day and the scenery was stunning, the first few photos are from this walk.
Our second day was a bit of a surprise, our friends had booked a trip for us but we hadn't a clue what it was, we were getting a little concerned as to what it could be! We had no need to worry however as they had booked a Segway ride. If you don't know what a Segway is take a look at their website Lakeland Segway. I was a little apprehensive at first learning how to control it, but soon found my feet. I cant say that I went as fast as Nick and our friends but I certainly whizzed along!
We then took a daring trek up to Snarker Pike which was approximately 2112 feet. We got up a little further, as we wanted to get up to Red Scree but the cloud came in and we could only see a few feet in front of us. We knew that going down the other side was very steep and without knowing the terrain and being able to see further than a few feet in front of us, we thought it safer to go back the way we came.
Our favourite visit of the week was to Beatrix Potters Hill Top Farm which was absolutely wonderful, I cant describe how we felt when walking around knowing that this was where she lived and loved to be. We saw old photos of her in the house, her garden and the views she would have admired. We stood in front of her writing and painting table and were just in awe, that this was where she wrote and illustrated her books.
Our travels also lead us to an old farmhouse called Townend Farm in Troutbeck. Troubeck was one of Beatrix Potters Favourite Places and the farm is now looked after by the National Trust. It dates back to around 1626 and was utterly fascinating.
Blackwell arts and crafts house was also a good visit, which was again fascinating and there were exhibitions there too, and you can view the house and some of the crafts we saw at the Blackwell website.
Our final big trek was up Wandsfell Pike which was 1581 feet. It was very windy at the top and there are photos of this walk below. It was a lovely day and again we walked the entire day with a Pasty stop and a pub stop along the way! Imperative to have pub stops for walkers in the Lake District!
All in all I would recommend a visit to the Lake District, we hope you enjoy our photos below and we shall certainly be going back soon! |
