Sending Digital Photos...Help!

Both Nick and myself work from photos and they are key to a good portrait. The clearer and better quality the photo, in all honesty, the better your portrait will be. For actual help on taking photos and advice in that area please visit our Pet Portraits Photography Tips page >>

If you have already taken your photos, you have viewed them on your computer and you are happy with the results, you next need to email them to us so we can paint from them. Easy!...or is it?

Often clients have difficulty emailing photos as some email software can reduce the file size of the images for email. For instance if you email photos via Picassa it can reduce the images for you and email them almost without you noticing what it has done. This is because for the most part, the software is wizard driven - its leading you through the process being very helpful sending your emails and photos very quickly though the internet. However! This isn't helpful to us as we need to see the photo the original size they came from the camera.

Hopefully this page will help our clients email the original size photos to us. Unfortunately I am unable to give step by step help for everyone individually as everyone is undoubtedly using different software from picassa, aol, gmail, outlook express, windows live, yahoo, bt online mail - or even email photos from a mobile phone....the list is endless.

What I can do is give you a little guidance to try to email the photos the long way around, hopefully enabling you to have full control over your emails. If, after you have read this page, you need to ask for advice please don't hesitate to contact me at any time.

Emaling your original size camera photos....
Digital cameras these days should be taking a decent sized photos. Therefore the photos that you get from your camera, as long as you don't do anything to them, the dimensions should be in their thousands - not in their hundreds. So for instance my camera photo dimensions are 4592 x 3056. Working on a pc i can find this information out by either right clicking the image and viewing the properties or left clicking an image once in the folder and the information shows at the bottom of the folder.

So once you have your photos on your computer and they are still their original size, we need to email them. We don't want to use any programs to help us - all we need is your email software and the photos. My advice would be to send only one or two at a time to start with, so choose your favorites to send at the start.

Open your email software and start a new email to me - petportraitartist@gmail.com What we are looking for is the 'attachment' feature in your email software. This is usually just above the area where you type a message. It can sometimes say - 'add attachment', 'add photos' etc. Click the button and it will open a dialogue box to browse to your computer. Locate your photos folder, open and click once on one of the images. Click open / attach and it should have attached that image to the email.

If at any time the software asks you to reduce the files size, either decline - or try to choose the largest file size you can.

Click send on the email and we will let you know what happens at our end!

Alternative ways of getting your photos to us....
If all else fails and you are unable to email us the original file size of your photos there are alternatives ways below to send us the photos. We need to try these methods before you print and send photos in hard copy. Home printed, or even printed photos from kodak etc are never as good as seeing the original digital version. This would be the last resort. Have a look at the options below to see what would be best for you.

Dropbox
I have dropbox and its so easy to use! Visit this link - http://www.dropbox.com/
  1. Install dropbox.
  2. Once installed double click the icon on your desktop and it will open a dropbox folder.
  3. Place your folder of photos into the dropbox 'photos' folder.
  4. Right click your folder and choose dropbox >> share this folder and it will take you to a simple form on their website.
  5. Add my email address into the top box and a message into the bottom and your images will automatically be shared with me on my computer. Easy!

CD / DVD
If you have a cd / dvd rewriter on your computer (99% of computer should have them ) you can add your photos to a cd or dvd and mail them to us in the post. We will always return your cd's and dvd's along with your artwork.

Memory stick
If you have a memory stick you are more than welcome to mail this to us with your images on. Make sure the images you have taken from your camera are at the original size.
  1. Locate the folder of photographs and have it so you can see it on your monitor with no other windows open.
  2. Put the memory stick into your usb drive in your computer.
  3. A dialogue box will appear with a list of options. Choose open folder. It will open your memory stick for you.
  4. Locate your folder of photographs and left click and drag this folder into the memory stick folder.
  5. Close all folders and mail the stick to us - we will always return your memory sticks ASAP.

Mail us your camera card
Alternatively you can mail us your camera card. We will copy your images onto our computer and then return your card to you the next working day.

Mobiles and Smart Phones....
Some of the new smart phones now have fairly good cameras on them and if you have taken a photo with a smart phone and you would like us to view it, please do email it to us for us to see.

If you would like to email a camera phone photo, the best way is to do this via your computer as you will be able to send the photos at their original size. Smart phones and camera phone photos are usually fairly low in resolution and so its important to make sure that you send them the original size the phone took them at. You can connect your phone to your computer with the cables provided and transfer them and then email them in the normal way. This is probably the best way of emailing photos as often emailing them via your phone itself will result in reduced resolution images being sent.

If your mobile phone is more than a few years old, its likely that the photos wont be suitable for a painting or drawing. If you are able to email them however, we will always be happy to take a look for you.

Please see our main photography page for more information on taking photos with your smart phones. Photography Tips >>
