The snow has arrived!

We managed to get Whiskey the cat to the framers yesterday and do some last minute shopping before the snow. We knew that by the time it was framed and ready to collect today, it would have snowed quite a bit, so we had been making plans as to how we were going to get the portrait back to the studio and packed ready for it to be posted on Monday. We decided the best course of action was to walk to the next village, which is 2 miles down a lovely windy lane and the up the other side of the village to the framers. You can see a photo of Nick and Tom as we started out…..

It took us about three quaters of an hour to get there and it was pretty hard going along the main road through the village, there was an abandoned lorry in the layby, kids and parents out with sledges and throwing snowballs, people clearing their drives, it was a hive of activity. Its amazing how everyone pulls together when things are chaotic. We collected the portrait, which looked fantastic and started our journey home. It was uphill on the way back so Tom was very helpful and pulled me up the hill : ) Photo below of us at a farm gate.

We arrived home just as it started to snow again and the wind was a lot keener on our return journey and we were glad to get back. They say it’s going to snow more overnight so I’ll post another photo tomorrow if it does. I think this will be the most we have had in a long while.  I have probably said many times on here before, because the UK doesn’t get snow that often, the country is never really prepared for it. Salt supplies are always low, the narrow lanes take a long time to be gritted..but it’s all fun if you don’t have to go anywhere in a hurry!

The about us pages on our website
If you are interested I have updated our snow page with some photos we took on our journey today. In actual fact I have updated and renewed all of  the About Us section which I have been needing to do for ages as a lot of it was out of date. I have been working on it over the last few weeks and uploaded it a few days ago.

Take a look at the chickens page which introduces all the hens – you can see little Emily below in the snow. I also added more photos on the smallholding page which introduces the pet sheep and some of our animals from years gone by when growing up. I revamped our bio pages, and updated the Where We Live page too. Finally, something I have been meaning to do for months, I added photos on the cottage garden page of the small area of woodland we bought earlier in the year. I can’t actually believe it was that warm and lovely when I look out of the window today and see everything covered in snow!

So finally here’s Whiskeys portrait framed, which I have added to the website on the gold framing page, and I’m going to pack it up tomorrow and book it in for the courier to collect on Monday – if they can. Keep your fingers crossed it arrives to its destination safely and in time for Christmas too. I hope you are keeping warm wherever you are!

Monty has been collected, Ellie’s portrait has been collected and I have now spent some time taking a range of photos of Stigs portrait and the framed print for the website and blog. I have added Stigs portrait into the gold framing section too.

I have also taken some time to take new photos of the packaging we use with Stigs portrait as the example, as the photos I have been currently using were taken a few years ago and things have changed a little since they were taken.

It has worked out well as I have been gradually adding Stigs portrait in stages on our ‘How it Works‘ page to show prospective customers how the commissioning process works so have added the new diagram of how the portraits are packaged on there too. All I have to do now is pack it for real! But first we need to go and have something to eat as we have skipped lunch today so I will no doubt be back to post the next instalment tomorrow.

It’s an organising day today! First of all we have picked up two portraits and the print from the framers.  Just waiting for the client to come and pick up Monty’s portrait, the oil portrait in previous post. Also waiting for the courier to pick up Ellies oil portrait and we know that will get to the recipient too before this forecast snow. I don’t quite know what to believe at the moment as the weather forecast keeps changing from rain to snow, to sleet, but we are making sure everything is organised just in case.

I have taken photos of one of the framed portrait we collected this morning, it’s the chap with the shire horse. It’s taken a  little longer to frame as the client requested a plaque for the portrait and I think it has turned out beautifully. We had to source a traditional wood frame which was suitable for a plaque to fit, as not all mouldings work with plaques. I have added it to the framing section of the website too. It looks fantastic here in the studio and I’m just going to pack it up ready to send. I will post later with the next framed portrait.

Here is Montys final scan and we are just arranging the pick up as it seems snow is forecast so hopefully they will just get here on time! I will let everyone know what happens!

This is our final Pet Portrait of 2010 and it’s of a lovely dog called Monty. It’s for a local client and Nick is completing this one in oils on canvas which will be displayed on the wall unframed. I will hopefully have a final scan asap.

Monty's First Stage

Earlier this Month South China Morning Post in Hong Kong emailed to ask if they could telephone us for an interview. I spoke to a lovely lady over the phone and the article has now come out and you can read it in a larger version our ‘Pet Portraits in the Press‘ page

Heres Ellie’s Oil portrait framed and I have added it to the website framing section too. Its a really lovely frame, its great quality and its from the more expensive range our framers provides and the quality really shows when you handle the frame. The colours go well with Ellie and this moulding is perfect for canvas portraits as it has a slightly deeper rebate to cover the canvas.

Tom did well at training classes this week, it was the last agility session and we came first in the class again so we are so delighted. We have been looking back at footage and photos of him when he first came and not only has he grown (as he will be two this month) but he is so much more confident now. We still have a long way to go but its great to see.

This is the final scan of Whiskey and we are hoping to take it to the framers in the next few days to be framed. It will be framed in a lovely gold frame which I think will pick out the ochre colours of Whiskey well. Things are busy here in the studio getting ready for Christmas ourselves as well as organising portraits, framing, clients for next year so all go here! Hope you are managing to get organised where ever you are!

Final Scan Of Whiskey in Pastel

This is the next stage of Whiskeys Portrait that Nick is working on. Hoping to have a final scan soon!

Next Stage of Pastel Portrait

Nick is now working on the lovely portrait of Whiskey and I have added the first couple of stages below. He will be working on it again today and I will post some more stages later or early tomorrow.

Still very cold here and I took some photos of the chickens in the frosty garden enjoying a digestive biscuit this morning. We are making sure they are well fed and have plenty of water as everything is so very cold. I will make a page in our about us section for them with these new photos as I have been meaning to do it for a while. The rescue hens Bunty and Ginger, are doing so well and are both laying every day even in this cold weather. Amazing considering they had never experienced the out doors and eating grass let alone walking on snow!
