Archive for September, 2010

These photos have recently been sent to us by our clients of the portrait Nick completed of Paco last month.  Doris has taken some wonderful photos of Paco with his portrait and I have finally added them to our customer testimonials gallery on the website too. A little while ago I overhauled the feedback page and its looking so much better now and you can see Paco pretty much in the centre of the page. All of the images are clickable and you can view the clients testimonials and their photos on the individual feedback pages. Check Pacos portrait out here – Pacos Testimonials

Nicks already started the horse portrait you can see on the left in the client list and I will be adding photos asap!

Nick has been working on this portrait for a while, however I have been very busy in the studio and haven’t had time to take photos of his progress. So here is the final scan and a detail of this portrait of Sam. We have received some lovely photos of Paco framed and I will blog them asap too!

Here’s Nicks latest portrait commissioned by our client to give as a Christmas gift to his wife. We worked with two single photos for this portrait and I think the results have been very successful. Once it is okayed with the client we will take it to the framers. Its a 12 x 10 portrait and I will post images of the portrait when its framed.

Here is the framed pastel portrait of Max and its going to be packed and sent via courier to the client in the next few days. The client was delighted and heres a snippet from her email.

It’s Rachel here, Max’s owner !!!!! What a brilliant portrait this is. I love the chosen frame. Thank you so much for this wonderful piece of art work that will be with us for a lifetime. Max will be chuffed. This will have pride of place in our home and we will be recommending you to all our animal loving friends. Thank you again.

The horse portrait Nick has painted recently has arrived back from the framer and we are delighted with the frame it was the perfect choice. I will be adding it to our framing section on the website asap. Its an expensive moulding, but its a very good quality moulding and when we saw Nicks painting framed in it, it looked like something from the National Gallery! I am so pleased we have found this new range of mouldings, our framer is fantastic and we are so pleased we have found her too. I’m not sure if we have said previously but our old framer moved away at the start of the year and so we had a patch where we didn’t have anyone to frame our portraits but luckily for us a lovely framer moved to the next village and started up a framing business in July so we have been building up a new range of frames with her for our customers ever since. She is only a mile away opposed to our old framer who was about 35 miles away in the mountains. This has enabled us to expand our framing service and provide some amazing frames for our clients.

Mouldings suitable for canvas are tricky to source due to the deep rebate needed for the canvas. Our canvases are 19mm deep and so we need to use mouldings that are just over 19mm to cover the canvas. This enables the painting to be fully contained within the frame. Sometimes framers use thinner rebate mouldings as they are more readily available but this results in the canvas protruding out the back of the frame which isn’t idea and can look a bit messy and unprofessional. This can been seen from the side of the painting when hung on the wall. So we have made sure that we can provide a good variety of mouldings suitable for our oils and we are really pleased with this one.

I took a photo of the back of the frame to show how our framer has skilfully  positioned the canvas within the frame so as to ensure that the canvas is secure but at the same time protected.

Here is the final scan of the horse portrait Nick has just been working on of Sonny. It was dry enough to scan which means it’s dry enough to go to the framers tomorrow along with the Dachshund that’s waiting to go as well. Nick has already started work last week on a pencil portrait, he started it in between this horse’s drying stage and he will hopefully have this completed tomorrow so I will scan it for you to see. Its looking lovely already.

Here is the next stage of Nicks horse portrait. He is starting to add the details in the man part of the face using smaller brushes and tomorrow he will work on the highlights. The background is getting dryer so hopefully I will be able to scan it soon.

The bonfire in the woodland is still burning! We have been clearing areas each late afternoon and evening as the weather is not too bad. Hope to take some photos tomorrow.

horse portraits in oils

I was supposed to blog Nicks portrait a few days ago but I am a little behind! Things have been very busy in the studio these last few days,  I have been working a lot on the websites and so the photos of his new horse portrait have been piling up ready to be blogged! Nick started this portrait last week and its coming along nicely. Its for a birthday gift in October and hopefully it will be finished in the next few days so I will have a final photo or scan soon. The background is still wet at the moment so it cant go in the scanner but hopefully in a few days it will be dry enough.

Toms Training

Toms training went well on Saturday, I think he was slightly calmer and he did well with his walk on Friday with Meg his collie friend. He didn’t bark as much, so its just going to take time and effort to give him the confidence he needs

Our new Woodland Garden.

We are both pretty excited at the moment as  we have bought an area of woodland and garden just below and to the side of our cottage garden and its finally ours! Its been a long time coming, we started the process in June and so to now be able to go into the new land is fantastic.  Tom is having fun running around to his hearts content and the chickens are loving it too. The whole area has not been looked after for many years and so we are working a lot to clear it. Eventually we want it to be a  woodland garden with paths and natural flowers along with a new vegetable garden just below our original garden. The long term plan is to have a log cabin retreat there too but that will all come in time.

I didn’t grow any vegetables this year as I knew my original plot would be moving, so I have done a lot of work to prepare ground for new raised beds. It will all look a lot better when its naturalized in the spring and I cant wait to grow veg again next year. We will hopefully add some photos for the website soon, I will have to do a diary of photos from when its all over grown and as it develops. Nick is actually having a bonfire out there as we speak and I’m off to see what he’s getting up to!

We have just received the fireplace dogs portrait back from our framer and the moulding is exquisite! Its goes so well with the portrait, it was just meant to be. These mouldings are such high quality its great to be able to send them to the clients knowing that they are such a great product. Off to dog training tomorrow, fingers crossed Tom is better with the other dogs. He’s getting better each week.

I have been working on these portraits this week for a returning customer in the US. The client asked if I would be able to complete them for a birthday at the start of October and hopefully if we post them off this week they will be there just in time : ) Nick is also working on a pencil portrait, he is then hopefully going to block in an oil horse and then back to the top portrait in the client list.
