Here’s the next stage of Cheyenne’s oil painting, I will start to add the detail on her head and shiny areas next and I hope to have another stage online by early next week. We are going away this weekend to stay with my parents so will be back to work on Monday.

Here’s the final scan of Sophie the cat and it will be sent hopefully on Thursday as the edges of the canvas as still a little tacky. I also have to sign the portrait – the most important part. Sophie the cat has travelled a lot in her life but she is now in retirement and I hope that her family enjoy the portrait.

While the painting of Cheyenne is drying on the drying wrack, I have been working on a deadline piece of a white cat called Sophie. I initially wanted to add a soft muted green in the background, however one of the photos the clients sent, had some lovely coffee colours behind Sophie which seemed to match really well with the colouring of her coat and I felt it actually brought out the colour of her green eye better.

Background colours are really important within a piece, the tones and hues are often as important as the main subject. Sometimes my students look at a photo, see colours in one part of the portrait – i.e. green eyes, and create a similar tone or a brighter more vivid tone behind, thinking that because there is a colour within the scene it will marry well together, but sometimes it isn’t the case.

I’m not sure if Cheyenne will be dry enough for me to work with tomorrow, black paint is notorious for taking longer to dry than other colours, especially the first coat. I will play it by ear, if its ok to work with a new stage of Cheyenne will be online tomorrow – if not it will be another stage of Sophie!

This is the next stage of Cheyenne and this is as far as I can go for a couple of days as I will need to leave it to dry for a little while. I will be drawing out a cat portrait in oils for a deadline and will post the first stage of that as soon as its done.

This is the next stage of Cheyennes painting this is a very early blocked in stage and I will have a new stage to post tomorrow.

This is the first stage of Cheyenne, she is a 16 x 12 painting on canvas for clients in the US and I will hopefully have a new stage tomorrow.

Here at last are the final photos of the cats portraits in oils. I am going to take better photos of them outside on Sunday as its overcast and rainy here. We have had wonderful weather for the last 4 weeks and now we are going through a bit of rain, but we do need it for the garden I have to say. I hope that you like the process and stages, I had to make a decision whether to put them as separate files or together and I felt as they are supposed to be together hanging on the wall their flash slide show should be too. I’m sure you can still get the gist of the stages.

We have now got photos of the ‘Snow Dog’ Rough Collie pet portrait that Nick painted in pastels earlier this year and the colour of the frame works wonderfully with the colours in the Rough Collie. The frame compliments the portrait beautifully and the client was really pleased.

This is the next stage of one of the cats portraits I have been working on. This one is slightly more forward than the other one and I think I’m going to continue working on it to completion and then move on to the other one. I am at a good stage now where I’m happy that they both match and the colours go well together.

We now have a training lead for Tom (50 foot) and we are taking him to a friend field this afternoon so I’m looking forward to seeing how he does on it. We need to work on his recall as he is ok in the house but as soon as he’s out and about there are always sooo many more wonderful noises, smells and things to see!
