These are the next stages of the horse and rider pastel portrait I am working on. We are now taking a few dasy break to visit my niece and nephew in Cornwall so will be back working on this portrait on Monday. Hope you all have a good weekend.

I have now started a portrait in pastel of a horse and rider. The initial composite was to have two smaller portraits either side of the main head study of the rider cantering and also one of the horse standing, however I didn’t feel the composition was perfect. There was a lot of space either side of the main study which was giving an uncomfortable bottom heavy composition.

It is very difficult to design an aesthetically pleasing composition for a montage as often many hours are aspent on this stage getting everything right. Sometimes the photographs just work perfectly together but other times you know that somethings not pleasing to the eye. On this occasion the client had a wonderful range of photographs for me to work from and we settled on a portrait of the horse and the client which I feel works really well due to the interaction between the two. You can see that there is a special bond between horse and rider and Im hoping to bring this through in the portrait.

This is a 20 x 16 pastel on velour and I will post further stages tomorrow.

I have been working on a pastel portrait of a client with her horse which I hope to blog the stages of tomorrow, however I thought I would first post a few photos a client has emailed of a commission I did recently along with a quote from their email below. I am pleased with the outcome, and really enjoy viewing the portraits framed.

“….I have attached a few photos of the framed portrait that nick has drawn of my friesian mare. I absolutely love the picture, its amazing and nick has managed to capture my horse’s character 100%.:) It was the best birthday present ive ever being given :) …”

Hi All!

We have just had Nicks sister and brother-in-law stay and they are travelling home this morning so I’m now catching up on emails and the blog. I have had some wonderful photos sent to me by a returning customer, they have commissioned me to draw their dogs over the years and I have been joking with them that they will need to start having open days for their collection to prospective clients : ) They have said ….”They do look good all mounted and framed, and they match!!” Parker is their latest addition and you have probably seen this one on my blog in the previous few weeks.

Nick and I are now off for a few days to visit my little niece and nephew who are staying with Nicks parents for a couple of weeks in their summer holidays in Cornwall. It will be lovely to see them, although I am sure we will be looking forward to coming back for a rest! The children, particularly the eldest who is 6, was highly excited on the telephone this morning and we have promised to play lots of games with them when we arrive, he has a list of activities he wants us to do already!

So until next week I shall say bye for now and enjoy your week and weekend!

Here is my latest portrait of Chester a king Charles Spaniel. Things have been busy in the studio this week, we have been out for a wonderful meal with a client, Maxwells family who collected their paintings, and we have our own family visiting this week so we are busy preparing for their visit too. I will catch everyone up on the news soon  : )

Hi all,

Here is the final scan of the latest portrait to come off my easel of Holly. I am really chuffed with how this one has come out.  Holly was laying on someone’s lap in the photo and I could visualise some nice warm rich coloured blankets and cushions to replace this to give a nice feel and look to the portrait. Hope you like it! I’m starting a spaniel next and will add the stage soon. [svgallery name="hollister1"]

I have been busy these last few days working on a wedding pencil portrait. This is actually for someone we know to give to her husband as a wedding anniversary gift. She has commissioned a portrait of them both as a gift as the first year anniversary is ‘paper’. We often get to do anniversary gifts for the first year of marriage as its a very unique thing to give and guaranteed the other person won’t have thought of doing it. Their wedding last year was stunning, it was just perfect. Not too over the top, very well thought out and organised and both Melanie and I enjoyed ourselves greatly.

The clients arrived on Saturday evening to pick up the local portrait and they loved it. Its great to be able to do a portrait for clients who can come and collect the artwork as so often we have to mail it to them and so don’t get the chance to see their reactions.

I am wokring on the black dog I posted a few days ago and am doing a few amendments to it and I will update the post below when its complete.

This is a pencil portrait of two twins called Megan and Rhys. This was a 16 x 12 portrait in pencil on Italian Fabriano paper. It can take a long time to get these small portraits of people “just right”. There is such a fine line between captureing the  persons character, and there being something not quite right, particularly tricky when you have only one or two photos to work from. Thats not to say I don’t enjoy doing them, I love the challenge.  The clients are local to us and this is for a birthday in a couple of days time. They are collecting the portrait later today and are very pleased with the outcome. One that definitely needs to go on the website!

A wonderful email with photos arrived the other day from one of my clients who has recently received her spaniel portrait. The family were delighted with the portrait and they said they would try to take some photos of Winston and Daisy with the painting. When they arrived I was absolutely over the moon as these are just perfect photos of them with their painting!

I love the top one best with the look on Winstons face, just slightly leaning back!  The photo has caught him so well. Apparently it was quite a photo shoot, they were sitting really well for their photo until Winston rolled onto his back which caused Daisy to jump on him and play! So they, played and ran around the garden for a while, then had their dinner and consequently posed much better after that! What a wonderful story – and wonderful photos for the blog and website! I will be definitely adding these to the website in my next round of updates : )

Hi Everyone,

Its been a couple of days since I blogged last and I have been beavering away at my easel on my next portrait of Holly (Hollister) who is sadly not with us any longer. This is a 16 x 12 oil portrait on canvas for a client in the US who is also having the portrait matted and framed under glass by our framer. I have added the stages in my newly found software which is really quite cool. I hope it will enhance the blog and I hope everyone can see and use it ok.

I have to just mention at this point that it seems its no longer summer here in Wales. Many of you are possibly reading this from many miles away and if you live somewhere warm please send good thoughts of sunshine our way! Wales is known for its rain but the forecast for the next four days is rain, rain and more rain. It poured hard yesterday and just over 300 miles away I spoke to a family member in the South of the UK and they had bright blue sky and sunshine all day. We really don’t get our fair share! Its quite funny we often have visitors to the studio and they travel from far and wide and one friend that came to visit us recently drove up from England and got out of his van in shorts and t-shirt looking as brown as a berry, greeted Nick and I who were in comparison as pale as milk and he immediately put on his jeans and a woolly jumper! Thats Wales for you…but it does make up for it in many other ways so we shouldn’t really complain.. : )
