This is my latest portrait completed, its a bautiful dog and im really pleased with how he has turned out. It was a 12 x 10 on velour.

This is one of my latest family portraits, via my people portraits website. I am asked to create a lot of local portraits of families, particularly for birthdays and Christmases as they are wonderful gifts for parents and grandparents, however this commissions was a little further afield from Australia. It was a 16 x 12 portrait on Italian Fabriano paper in graphite pencil. I have been really busy with my portraits this week and weekend and have another I have just completed, of a dog in pastel which I will blog next.

The photos below have just been emailed to me by one of my previous clients as they have just had their portrait framed. Its wonderful to be able to see my portraits framed and everyone chooses such amazing frames too! This one certainly matches the portrait and brings out the colours in the pastel beautifully.

Here are the final photos of my most recent portrait, completed at last. I spent quite a lot of time on this painting to get it just right, so im a little behind schedule. Well I say that im a little behind schedule as I had mentioned my my next client I would be starting her portrait last week, but in my opinion you can’t put a limit on how long portraits take. That’s one of the most difficult questions im asked by both clients and students/amateurs starting out. How long should it take you to paint an average sized painting? Really the answer should be how long is a piece of string! Everything depends on how good the photo is, how difficult the breed of dog is to paint, the background, the amount of detail needed, if it has a collar this is going to take extra time, does the chest go down to the bottom of the canvas or is it blended off. I’m sure there are many other factors too, but I find it so difficult to give an estimated time scale. Every portrait I do is different and i often wonder if this is the same for everyone else. I think all I can say is I keep going until I am happy with it! : )

These are the first couple of stages of my current portrait I am working on. I will be adding more later today and hope to have a final photo in a few days.

I have tackled this portrait in a slightly different way than usual partly as it has a background and I wanted to integrate it with the dog and keep all the lovely colours uniformed throughout. I wanted to create a very soft and out of focus feeling in areas of the portrait. The photo was a great one to work from as it had a very soft focus feel so I was able to build upon this and enhance it in the portrait.

I have added some of the work in progress, the final photo and some details, I hope you enjoy looking at them.

This is a photo along with the mount, although it has whited it out a bit.

The following photos were taken on my easel and so the colours aren’t quite right. The photos were taken with photographers lighting and a different camera so it allows the portraits natural colours to show through.

This is a lovely cat I have portrayed for a client, Melanie was also commissioned by them to paint their dog in oils. Sadly neither pets are with us any longer so the portraits will be a great reminder for them.

This is one of my more recent commissions, it was from a returning customer and i have added a full photo and a close up detail of the portrait. it was a 12 x 10 portrait in pastel on velour. I have been quite busy with the portraits of late and I will blog a cat and then some work in progress for my latest portrait I am working on.

Hi All,

These are the latest stages to the pet portrait I am doing at the moment. Everything is being kept really soft at this stage, although I think there is more detail on the original, but this one is a tricky one to photograph on my easel. It will be better when its set up with the photography lights either side I think. I will post more stages tomorrow.

Its been a busy day and im working late tonight on admin and client emails. Its gone 9pm already and I am aiming to finish about 11pm I think. Christmas emails and enquiries have started to come in and we are both getting really booked up which is good news considering the credit crunch. I hope its not effecting anyone who’s reading this too badly. Lets keep our fingers crossed it

doesn’t last too long.

Hi Everyone!

Here I am again 5 days later, wow so much has happened here which has put me a little behind with my work. We have been doing some unplanned renovating in our cottage and its really quite exciting that im gathering all of our photos together that we took step by step and ill make a blog post about it. I don’t usually add personal things to this blog as its solely for my portraits, but it has been a huge part of my working week this week so i feel the need to show everyone what’s been happening. So ill get those photos together in the next day or so. In the mean time here is the latest portrait I have been working on. Its a really tricky one and I will be adding more stages asap.
