Heelooo!

Here is an updated photo of the stage I have got to so far. I have now added the grass, it needs more detail but this is the basic blocked in stage. I have also added some more tones on the dog and blended them and I will hopefully work some more on it this evening! Off to cook tea!

Hi Everyone,

I have been typing away at my computer all morning doing emails and mock-ups for new client enquiries, packed up a couple of portraits and generally trying to catch up a little. This afternoon I was able to get back to my easel to start a new portrait, which is of a Jack Russell sat in grass.

Due to not having a full day panting I have started a little differently with this one. If I was to start first thing I would have blocked in the background and then blocked in the dog, however it took me a while to draw it out so there wasn’t much left of the afternoon to start to paint. I wanted to get the basic areas of fur in first so that I didn’t lose my lines before going in with the grass and i knew once i had done this I would run out of time for any background painting. It takes quite a few hours of concentration to block a background and the dog together and I like to have a good chunk of the day to really get into it. So I have gone over my lines and added some darker shadows and the eyes, nose and ears in and tomorrow I will work further on both dog and background and blend everything together. I think it will look quite different this time tomorrow!

Hope you all enjoyed your day, its 9pm and im off for a cuppa!

Hi All,

If you are a follower of my pet portrait forum, you may have heard that I had a surprise up and coming that lot of members were waiting in anticipation to hear about. It has finally been revealed today after a little organisation. Getting it all together this morning was a little frantic but it all worked out in the end! If you would like to read about the competition visit the link below.

Derwent are donating a wonderful prize of a set of 120 artists coloured pencils in a wooden presentation box worth £155 which was so unexpected, it was just amazing. The! as if that wasn’t enough we also have Pollyanna Pickering as our judge! its just been quite a roller coaster and im really looking forward to seeing everyone’s entries.

Basically members have to paint the two tigers in the photo at the link above but create their own background from reference photos they can find on the internet or in their own collection. Imagination, feeling of the pice and composition is key to this I think.

I will keep everyone updated with the competitor here as well as on the forum, the closing date is October 31st – Halloween! and I will add all the entries in a special place on the forum. The winning member will be announced at the start of November and I will blog the winning piece too.

Good luck for those who enter!!

Hi All,

This is my latest pet portrait of an alaskan malamute called Kimba. He is a drawing in graphite pencil to the size of 12 x 10. He was a joy to draw and i enjoyed capturing that thick but soft textured fur they have. Hope you all like him too!

This is an usual commission, my postman asked me to draw a mummy penguin with her arms around two babies. Bless! This is a very small drawing, so its larger than life size here. Its only 3 inches across, i admire miniature artists i don’t know how they do it any smaller! Nicks just drawing the postmans kids too so im sure he will be adding them to his blog in the next few days.

Hi Everyone!

Its been a full week here in the studio. First of all I have been organising a surprise for the pet portrait forum and am liaising between a couple of people for the surprise so some organizing going on. I will be revealing all on the forum hopefully this week sometime.

we also took a day off to take our friends out who were visiting from Germany so took them to a local beach. We haven’t been for ages as we aren’t so close to the coast since we have moved, so it was lovely.

Work wise I have completed a large 24 x 18 pencil portrait of three pets, 2 cats and a dog. I have added it below. I am also nearing completion of an Alaskan Malamute which I shall add asap too. Its been really busy commission wise, I have had lots of enquiries this week, I think everyone is starting to think about Christmas presents, which is good really as i am always booked up really fast. Having said that, and woudl you believe, i had a circular form my local grocery store and it has a picture of Father Christmas on…Already!!! its only August! Christmas advertising gets earlier and earlier each year, I promise I wont put anything festive on my site till December… : )
