PET PORTRAITS

I’m about half way on toffees pet portrait and im still having issues taking photos of the portraits in the evening. The artificial light really doesn’t capture the painting well, i think im going to have to start blogging first thing in the morning so i can take photos in daylight! I am looking forward to the clocks changing so that we can have some lighter evenings.

Here are the next stages of Toffee the Labrador pet portrait i have been working on. I have been painting him for most of the day and i have moulded him quite well, got in all the darks and lights that i need and im going to start on the detail tomorrow. I might need to leave him for a day so the blacks in the eyes can dry a little before I add detail to that area. Perhaps by the time I have done the detail in the coat the eyes will be dry enough. Often I find the black paint drys quite matt and a little lighter then when I first put down the colour, so a couple of three coats normally does the trick. Its good to get the iris really dark black as it helps the highlight to shine.

Not much else to report today, so will be looking forward to getting the next stages done tomorrow and i will of course blog my progress! The cats drying nicely and so i might have time to add some final detail on him too.

Hi Again : )

I blocked this pet portrait of a Labrador in a couple of weeks ago, i think if you scroll down i probably posted a ‘loads of paintings blocked in’ blog – that’s when i started this one. I like to have quite a few on the go at once and this is my next one. Its been sitting quite happily drying in the drying rack and I have actually got one stage further than this so hopefully i will have two stages to blog tomorrow. The days are going so fast at the moment, i cant believe we are nearing the end of February already. The cat took me quite a long time as it was one single head on a 20 x 16 and not a lot to really get your teeth into, however this portrait is a 12 x 10 and so will be slightly quicker in painting time than the cat. Back tomorrow!

Hi everyone!

I have been working on the cat pet portrait today and I added a close up below. Its about 90% done, i want to leave it for a day so that i can add the whiskers and some final details when the white is a bit dryer. It will be put in the drying rack and ill go back to it on Thursday so that i can look at it with fresh eyes to see if i can see any amendments. Its often a good idea to put a painting or drawing away for a while, as looking at it with fresh eyes always allows the bad points to jump out at you.

I will post the final scan soon. The photos i have taken during the process never show the portrait to its best due to bad lighting. I’m working on a Labrador tomorrow that is already started, I will blog the first couple of stages for you to see how far i have got asap.

This is the next stage of the cat pet portrait im working on. I have been under the weather for the last couple of days so i haven’t been at my easel. Nick had it last week and so im glad to say i feel much better today. I have been painting for most of the day today and have taken a photo of the next stage. The colours in the photo aren’t right as the photo was taken in the evening under a daylight lamp, but it gives you an idea. Hope to have a full day tomorrow which im looking forward to!

I have only had a few hours at my easel today, what with one thing and another the day has just flown by. I have been scanning some of nicks work in, and because im now on vista the scanning interface is completely different. Nick usually sorts these technical things out for me, it took a while but he managed to in the end. It gave me a chance to tidy the studio anyway! So i have only got as far as putting detail on one ear, i no doubt will add to it, but this is as far as im going with this area at the moment, ill move on to the next section and work my way around and then go back over it if anything is needed at the end. Will blog the next stage tomorrow!

Here are the next stages of the cat pet portrait on my easel at the moment. its been through the first drying stage so the background and main blocked in areas are dry and i have been getting the tones in place today. I think i am ready to start on adding more tones and some detail tomorrow. Its quite a big painting, the cats head is probably three or four times larger then the cat itself so i think its going to be pretty impressive when its on the wall. I just need to get enough detail and depth into the white areas which can often be difficult. Watch this space to see how i get on!

Had a busy day again in the studio, well part of it was spent at the hairdressers as i have had all my golden locks cut off! I have had long hair for years and years and i needed some photos taken for some promotion work and i felt it was time for a bit of a make over. It was sad to see the hair go, but the new look feels wonderful and i have added a couple of preview photos below.

I have also added the first two stages of an 8 x 10 pet portrait in oils on canvas of a rottweiler. I am hoping to go back to the cat again tomorrow, i have done a little bit on him today and so i will blog another couple of stages for that too. : )

Melanies Pet Portraits

I have been working quite hard this passed week drawing out and blocking in quite a few of my oil painting commissions to get them at the first stage for drying. I like to get myself organsied with a few painting all at similar stages so that i can pick and choose which i prefer to do on that day. It keeps me fresh and raring to go. I also think it helps to make the painting better as you are always excited to keep working on it.

I also thought i would start the year off by using my work in progress blog differently. I previously have been waiting till one painting was finished, putting all of the stages together and then blogging them in one post, but i thought this year i would try to blog every every day if i have been painting, to show you at least what painting i have been working on that day. So hopefully, although you will get quite a few varieties of random paintings at various stages, you will at least know what i have been getting up to more often.

There are some days i don’t paint at all due to tutoring and admin, and its surprising how much time is taken up by just emailing clients back and forth and doing emails. I wonder if everyone else is the same, do you have lots of admin to do? I often think i have just as much typing and organising as i do painting. There never seems to be enough hours in the day.

So here are a few portraits i have started and i will try to post more regularly each one at every stage : )
