Beagle and Cat pet Portraits

Hellooo Everyone!
Here is my latest pet portraits work in progress! It is an oils on canvas 30 x 24 on fine grain. I really enjoyed painting this portrait, i got so engrossed in this one i didn’t manage to take so many photos, but as you can see by the first stage, i drew out the subjects and started by painting the background. I then blocked in the main subjects and blended them in with the background. I finally started to add detail. Detail on a large painting obviously takes longer as there are larger expanses to cover. Often my students ask me what size brushes i use for this size fo painting and some of them tend to make the mistake of using ’000′ still for a painting of this size. I tent to go for the larger sizes and as long as they have a good springy point a ’round’ or a ‘flat’ works well. You will be surprised how thin your lines can be with them. I will upload a larger version of this to my showcase blog and post the link to it in a little while!

Beagle and Cat Pet Portraits!

Here is my most recent pet portrait. I thoroughly enjoyed painting this portrait, it is often difficult to add a cat and a dog in the same scene but these two work really well. It was painted on 30 x 24 canvas and works as a large portrait, because the background sofa is light and airy and isn’t too overbearing. I feel its quite a modern painting and will hopefully fit in with the clients decor well. They are absolutely thrilled with the final scan and hopefully it will be posted out to them next week.

Final scan of my latest oil pet portrait.

Here is one of my new portraits, its hot off the press and its drying nicely in the drying rack here in the studio. This type of breed is always tricky to paint the long wavy hair can be difficult, not as easy as an fluffy long haired Alsatian, and not so short and curly as a spaniel, sort of in between. Im sure those reading who have painted similar breeds will understand what i mean!

I enjoyed painting this one, particularly as the bandannas are very different to anything i have painted. I always like it when the portrait contains personalized items such as collars, toys etc as it really makes it a one off painting, unique to them. I hope that you enjoy viewing this painting!

Pet Portraits in oils

Hi everyone!

Here is one of my latest pet portraits in oils. It was painted on fine grain canvas to the size of 20 x 16. The client requested me to leave the bandannas in and i think they really add to the painting and make it much more personal to the client.

Stage one, two and three are the basic blocking in stages and getting things the right tones.

This is one of the final stages and then some close up details of the final scal

This is a small version of the final scan. A larger version will be added to my showcase blog and i will let you all know when its online!

‘Whitie’ Pet Portrait in oils on canvas

Hi Everyone!

I have time, at last, to blog some of the portraits i have been doing over the last month or so. As usual things have been busy around the studio, the days and weeks seem to fly by. Whitie was completed just before i went to Cornwall, and the final touches put to when i returned. She was painted on fine grain canvas at 20 x 16 and you can see the work in progress on my pet portraits work in progress blog. 20 x 16 which was perfect size for this as it allowed me to have enough space around the dog to place her in a setting. The client gave me plenty of photos to work with, sitting in her favoruite chair, with her favoruite toy. I merged a few photo together to create my own composition and this is the result. I also wanted to create a rich warmth to it as well. With the chair being leather it was the perfect colour backdrop for Whities fur and colouring and i enhanced this with the backgroudn to teh chair and the cushion. I hope that you enjoy the portrait! I ahve also started to upload my images larger so if you click on it i belive you can view it at a larger size. : )

Pet Portraits newest work in progress!

Hi Everyone!

I have completed the portrait below, and i have also started a few others which i have been adding to the work in progress on my website. The portrait below is of Whitie the dog and she is sitting on her favorite chair with her ball which was a very important part of the painting and she carries it everywhere. The pet portrait is painted in oils on fine grain canvas and is to the size of 20 x 16. I hope you all enjoy it and i will be adding a larger scan to my showcase blog in the next few days!
