Here is the final scan of the Cat and the Tulips

Heres my latest portrait of Sadie the Labrador in grass complete!

Here, as promised, is the final scan of Harleys Montage! Im just about to start blocking in the background of a labrador, and ill add the first stages of that on my work in progress this morning. Its another one with a green background, with some grass detail this time. Once i have done that i am going to be back working on the cat with the tulips on work in progress 4, ill add some more stages later today so stay tuned!

I have finished Harley the boxer! I have to say this is one of my personal favoruites as its so bold and striking. The shapes and colours work well and the pink diamanté collar sets everything off perfectly. I have started a montage drawing for this client too of Harley at different stages of her life and fantastic poses. I will show everyone when i have finished as some of the photos really make me smile.

Here’s a final scan of a Yorkie called Masiey. I really enjoyed doing this portrait, i love dogs with big warm brown eyes, they just look so adorable. I once painted 5 Yorkies all on one board, this was quite a few years ago now. They all came to visit me to have their photos taken and all came out running around at once! It was so much fun, but i do have to say i did keep getting them muddled up as to who was who! Anyway i hope you enjoy this portrait!

Here, as promised is the finals can of the Shelties portrait i have been working on this past month. For me this feels a very relaxing and peaceful portrait. I’m pleased with the colours as they aren’t my usual colours for a portrait. My clients wanted input into the background and i think that really helps to vary the portraits so that they aren’t all the same.

Below is a 20 x 16 oil portrait. The client wanted a specific colour green in the background, and i varied it from top to bottom to give some interest.

Below is a copy of my recent article in a Japanese Dog magazine.

My name is Melanie Phillips and i am a professional pet portrait artist, I specialize in painting and drawing Spaniels – they are one of my favorite breeds to paint. I have been drawing and painting ever since i can remember, I studied wildlife illustration at art college in the Uk and this gave me an excellent grounding in learning how to draw and paint animals. It helped me to understand the anatomy of the dog and how to create natural and realistic portraits.

I have been painting professionally for 10 years and i love every minute of it! I have a dream job! In actual fact my very first commission was a black cocker spaniel called Muffin in acrylic on artboard. I have developed a great deal since then and i now create most of my spaniel portraits in oils on canvas.

I paint Spaniels for clients from all over the world, some visit me here in the studio but the majority email me their photos. I really enjoy painting spaniels in a natural landscape setting, as i can really capture the spirit of their dog in their everyday surroundings.
My latest portrait is of the English Springer Spaniel in the reeds. Chilli is only a young spaniel and their owners wanted him portrayed in his favorite surrounding – just coming out of the water with wet ears! I felt that this really captured who he was and it really makes the portrait special to the owners.

Spaniels are a challenge to paint, especially if they have a bit of curl to their coat. Long fur is more challenging to paint than a short haired coat, you have to convey the soft delicate fine fur and keep the shape and contours of the dog, but its worth the dedication as the end results really do shine though!

Spaniels are special to me, they have such a great temperament, they have an unconditional love for you, and i see this in every spaniel i meet. It makes them all the more interesting for me to paint, as i have the challenge of capturing the heart and soul of every spaniel i paint.

This is my biggest commission yet! The size of the canvas was 36 x 24 and took a very long time to paint!

Here is one of my latest portraits, currently drying in my studio nearly ready to be sent to the client. I really enjoyed painting Naz particularly the colours and the rich background, I feel it really compliments the colours of the dog. You can see him in my Oil Gallery.
